About Kelly

Kelly Barrera brings more than 30 years of experience and leadership in education, training, aviation and business management to her role as vice chair of the St. Johns County School Board.  As a regional manager for Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, Kelly understands the importance of providing our students with the rigorous academic experience needed to prepare them for higher education, emerging technology and the 21st-century workforce.

A St. Johns County resident for more than 25 years, Kelly has first-hand experience with our schools. She was an active volunteer at her children’s schools, volunteering in the classroom and at athletic and extracurricular activities. In addition she has served our youth through long term advisory board positions with Ponte Vedra High School’s International Business and Marketing Academy, St. Augustine High School’s Aerospace Academy, and St. Johns County’s PACT Prevention Coalition Executive Committee.

Those experiences have informed her service as District 4 representative on the St. Johns County School Board and fueled her commitment to ensuring that St. Johns County continues to offer the best public school education available in the state of Florida.

School Board Accomplishments

As vice chair of the St. Johns County School Board, Kelly Barrera plays a strategic role in guiding the top-rated school district in the state, overseeing 39 schools, nearly 40,000 students and an operating budget of more than $315 million.

As your District 4 School Board representative, Kelly Barrera has:

  • Overseen the opening of three new elementary schools and the coming opening  of two, new K-8 schools
  • Expanded school choice and workforce education offerings across St. Johns County
  • Increased available Student Services programs through community service centers, Exceptional Student Education programs and guidance programs
  • Managed a seamless transition to a new superintendent and senior leadership team
  • Increased opportunities for parental and community involvement in our schools through:
    • Superintendent selection committee
    • Citizen’s Sales Tax Advisory Committee
    • Testing Task Force to reduce testing
    • Dozens of town hall/community meetings held across the district

    • Chairman: 2009-2011; oversaw $17 million budget
    • Treasurer:  2007, 2008, 2014
    • Board liaison to St. Johns County Economic Development Council

A Ponte Vedra Beach resident, Kelly has been married for 30 years to Gil Barrera. They are the parents to two children, have hosted two international exchange students and have two rescue dogs.
